A publication about darkroom process chemistry for black-and-white film, written for people who have already read the manufacturers' sheets.
Who it is for
Someone who develops film at home and has had it go wrong. They have run somewhere between five and a hundred rolls, they own a changing bag and a tank, and they have worked out that following the time on the box does not produce consistent negatives. They are already reading Ilford and Kodak technical sheets and are confused, because the two brands recommend different things for what looks like the same task.
A second reader overlaps with the first: someone who has accumulated or inherited negatives and wants to know whether their processing will let those negatives survive, and what properly fixed and washed means in numbers rather than in reassurance.
Both are comfortable with chemistry at the level of a well-written technical sheet. Neither wants to be told that film is magic.
What it publishes
Reconciliations of published data, worked calculations, diagnostic paths from symptom to mechanism, matrices of process parameters, and readings of data someone else published. Every process figure names the product, the formulation and the revision it came from, because a number without that context cannot be used. Where two sources disagree, the article explains why they disagree and which one applies when, rather than choosing a winner.
Safety is handled by citation rather than by omission. Statements about handling, dilution, storage or disposal cite a current Safety Data Sheet with its revision date. Procedures that carry a real hazard are not reproduced here; the article points at the manufacturer’s own document instead and says why.
Publication is selective. An article appears here only when its sources check out and it adds something a reader cannot get from skimming the usual results. The rules that govern that are in the editorial standards.
What it is not
The name misleads, so it is worth being blunt. This is not a site about repairing equipment and it has nothing to do with audio. Camera servicing and teardowns, lens reviews, buying guides, gear rankings, look-based film-stock comparison and shooting technique are all out of scope. Scanning appears only where it concerns densitometry and faithful reproduction.
